Series WT Torque Limiter Selection

Method Example

Data required for Torque Limiter Selection.
Horsepower and rpm of the drive, including reductions.
Downstream equipment limitations (ie. maximum chain pull, flight capacity, etc.)
Shaft details of the driving and driven equipment.
Drive Medium details.

(1) Determine the maximum Torque (in. lbs.) based upon
equipment limitations, (chain pull)

Select the Torque Limiter, which has a higher
torque rating.

(2)

Check the Limiting Conditions:

(a) Check the hub bore capacity is suitable
(b) Check the Torque Limiter dimensions such as
overall length and outside diameters.

(3) Select and specify appropriate drive medium.
All Autogard Series WT units may be supplied from the
factory at a pre-set torque and with required Drive Medium assembled to the unit.

Longitudinal collector tank, being driven by 1/2 HP motor operating at 1750 RPM via a gear reducer with a ratio of 1800:1.

Customer confirms that maximum allowable chain pull is equivalent to 6,500 in. lbs. at the reducer output shaft.
Reducer output shaft diameter is 1.50 inches.

Series WT Selection based upon chain rating: WT-1 with 2 Low Torque modules.

WT-1 Bore Capacity: 1.750 inches
The WT-1 with 2 Low Torque modules is acceptable in this application.

Ordering the Series WT Torque Limiter

When ordering please provide the following designation:

Model - Size / Modules / Bore
Example: WT - 1 / 2LT / 1.500

Refers to a Series WT size 1 Torque Limiter with 2 Low Torque Modules and a bore size of 1.500 inches.

Also specify
• Torque setting if required
• Limit switch plate option, if required.

Autogard Recommended Specification
The torque limiting device shall provide reliable protection against excessive loading. It shall be a ball and plunger-detent type which transmits torque through balls retained in a detent ring against adjustable spring pressure. When torque exceeds a preset value the balls move and release the preload allowing the plunger to disengage from its seat, providing complete disengagement of the driving and driven components.

The device shall not incorporate friction plates. The torque setting will remain constant within plus or minium 10% after each disengagement and resetting. The torque limiter shall incorporate provisions for an optional detector plate that can be used in conjunction with a limit switch or proximity device to sense an overload.

The torque limiter shall be adjustable over a wide range of torques, without requiring removal of the module, to allow for on-site adjustment. There shall be no shims between the module assembly and mating flange. It should incorporate provisions to make it tamper-proof, preventing unauthorized adjustments to increase the torque setting, if desired.
The mating seat, as well as any parts where sliding occurs during disengagement, shall be hardened to a minimum of 62Rc. The torque limiter shall be weather resistant for outdoor applications. All exposed components shall be 316 Stainless Steel. The torque limiter shall provide a method of manual disengagement by simple clockwise rotation of a threaded disengaging sleeve.

The manufacturer shall be the American Autogard Corporation.
